Before & After: How a Simple Kitchen Island Update Made a Big Impact

Not every transformation requires a full kitchen remodel. Sometimes, a single, well-executed update can completely change the feel of a space.

This recent project in Merrimack, NH focused on just one element—the kitchen island—but the results speak for themselves.

The Project: Small Scope, High Attention to Detail

The goal was to elevate the kitchen island with a refined, durable finish that would stand up to daily use while adding visual interest. Achieving that kind of result comes down to preparation, patience, and using the right materials at every step.

The Process: How It Was Done

  1. Preparation Comes First
The island cabinets were thoroughly cleaned using a gentle, cabinet-safe cleaner to remove grease, residue, and buildup.

  2. Careful Disassembly & Organization
All doors and drawer faces were removed, and hardware was labeled to ensure everything went back exactly where it belonged—no guesswork later.

  3. Sanding & Surface Prep
Every surface was sanded to create proper adhesion. Dust was removed completely before moving on to the next step.

  4. Priming for Longevity
A high-quality primer was applied and allowed to cure overnight. Once dry, the surfaces were lightly sanded again and cleaned to ensure a smooth base.

  5. Premium Paint Application
The island was finished with Benjamin Moore Advance in a satin finish—a durable, furniture-grade paint designed specifically for cabinetry.

  6. Decorative Glaze for Depth
To add character and dimension, a custom-colored decorative glaze was applied, giving the island a unique, elevated look.

  7. Protective Clear Coats
Multiple coats of clear lacquer were applied to seal and protect the finish, ensuring durability and easy maintenance for years to come.

The Result

The finished island now serves as a focal point in the kitchen—polished, durable, and visually rich. This project is a great example of how thoughtful craftsmanship and quality materials can deliver a high-end result, even on a smaller scale.
